LET X=0.499999.....

10X=4.9999..........

100X=49.999........

90X=100X-10X=49.999.....-4.9999...
= 45.000
NOW X=45.000/90=0.5

first, you've got to define the number of 9s in X.
Suppose X = 0.49999 (ie 4 9s), then
10X = 4.9999 (4 9s) 100X = 49.999 (3 9s)
Now, 90X = 100X - 10X = 49.999 - 4.9999 = 44.9991
Therefore, X = 44.9991/90 = 0.49999
everything's fine now, dont get worried... 0.49999 is not equal to 5

u had taken a wrong step.i.e.4.999999..................... indiacates the 9 will be continued up to so on. ok. it is clear

Check it with ur PC calculator
