SOME POINTS ON QUANTUM NUMBERS...
1) PRINCIPAL QUANTUM NUMBER -> "n"
why it is required?
To explain the main lines of a spectrum
What does it tell..????
a)Main shell in wich an electron resides
b)Approx distance of the electron frm the nucleus
c)Energy of the shell
d)Max no. of electrons present in the shell i.e 2n2
What are the values??
1,2,3,4,5,6,....i.e any integer
Other designations ...
K,L,M,N..etc
2)Azimuthal Quantum No. -> "l"...
Why is it required??
To explain the fine structure of the line spectrum
What does it tell..??
a)No. of subshells present in any main shell
b)Relative energies of the subshells
c)Shapes of the orbitals
What are the values....??
For a particular value of n , l can b = to 0 to n-1
Other designations..?
l = o , s subshell
l = 1 , p subshell
l = 2 , d subshell
l = 3 , f subshell
3)Magnetic Quantum No. -> "m"
Why is it required.??
To explain the splitting of lines in a magnetic feild
What does it tell??
No. of orbitals present in any subshell or the No. of orientation of each subshell
What are the values???
For a particular value of l , m can be frm -l to +l including zero
Other designations..
For p subshell , m = -1 0 +1 , directed as
px , py , pz
4) Spin Quantum No. -> s or ms
What it is required??
To explain the magnetic properties of substances
What does it tell??
Direction of an electron spin, i.e clockwise or anticlockwise
What are the values??
for a particular value of m , s can be -1/2 or +1/2
Other designations..
Two arrows pointing in opposite directions
