Studying Organic chemistry.
Engineering Entrance , JEE Main , JEE Advanced , nonacademic , academic , Chemistry , Chemistry , Chemistry , Organic chemistry

Many people constantly complain about how vast the syllabus of organic chemistry is. There are so many reactions to remember, so many compounds and so many reaction mechanisms. I got into IIT via JEE '12. Here is how my professors said to study:

DONT try to do 2-3 chapters on one day. Instead study organic chemistry for 1 hour everyday. Reactions that you feel you cannot remember, write down 1-2 times. Trust me, keep reading the chapters over and over again, and you will love organic chemistry just like I do! It will greatly help.

An organic compound (A). C8H6 on treatment with dilute sulphuric acid containing mercuric sulphate gives a compound (B), which can also be obtained from a reaction of benzene with an acid chloride in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride. The compound (B), when treated with iodine in aqueous KOH, yields (C) and a yellow compound (D). Identify (A), (B), (C) and (D) with justification. Show how (B) is formed from (A) ?

dude i hav  lots of doubts plzz help.  If possible give me ur id i want 2 ask some more doubts on org chem since u r good at it.

Sudhindra Shenoy, the compound is C6H5-HC2 i.e. Two Cs with a triple bond between them connected to a benzene ring. There is a H conected to one of the C atoms and the other one is connected to benzene ring. D is iodoform test. The compound (B) is acetophenone i.e. C6H5-CO-CH3. The HgSO4 adds an -OH group that tautomerises to give keto group.

To Debal and Sudhindra, read Cengage's Organic chemistry by K.S. Verma. It is the best book for JEE according to me!

 @ yash

how did u come 2 know that :

firstly it is a ring compound

secondly it has a triple bond

thirdlywhich is outside the ring

i  hav doubts in these type of questions where molecular formula is given & we hav 2 write stuctural formula

plzz help

Sudhindra, check the data given. It clearly states "compound formed when benzene reacts with aluminium trichloride and an acid chloride. There are 6 C's in benzene ring and total no. of C's in A is 8. Therefore acid chloride is with 2 Cs and it performs F.C. acylation(revise this, it is imp.) It has to be a unsaturated compound for HgSO4 to do anything. It can be determined that the two Cs have to be triple bonded coz' then only it will tautomerize after water is added across bond. Also, no of Cs and Hs can be counted. You need to know all imp. rxns at your fingertips.

Himanshu, Cengage is better because it is a complete book - includes problems and theory both. Solomon and Frhyle has too much theory, way beyond normal JEE requirements. It has problems that are not JEE type. For entrance exams in INdia, Cengage is better. S&F is too heavy a book for engineering entrances.

 dude ,

i know Degree of unsaturation in org comps but do not know position of double bonds , triple bonds, functional groups, substituents etc in problems where molecular formula will be given & we hav 2 write its structure . i know the reactions but fail miserably to identify d positions as mentioned.  In org chem text books they dont mention why the particular structure is taken 4 that reaction. Plzzzz help me i beg of u. If u hav any material related 2 this then plzzz mail me.
