Since u hv just entered in Class 11, u hv ample time on yr hands. Try to complete the entire IIT JEE Syllabus by September 08. (So that, if there is a slippage or say u fall sick or there is any other contingency, u still finish the Syllabus by December 08. Do not hv any study plans for Jan to March 09.....U will have Board Exams. U will have to revise the JEE Syllbs twice & write a lot of Tests from some Test Series....see where u r going wrong & fine tune yr revision.) Work backwards & draw a rough plan ( what u will complete in different Quarterly time buckets). Break the next Quarter?s plan into a detailed Daily plan excluding a plan for Sunday. Reserve every Sunday for revising what u hv studied during the first 6 days of the week. Also, reserve first 2 days of a month for revising what u did during the prev month. Stick to yr plan....if that calls for 4 hours of self study , that's fine. Or if it calls for 8 hours, so be it. See eventually it all depends on how fast u can grasp & how soon u feel confident that u r able to crack JEE type problems. In my personal opinion, an average student wd require at least 6 hours of self study during the weekdays & 10 hours on the Sundays to crack JEE. U ll have a lot of school exams & while planning u must factor in those dates ( when u ll perhaps not study at all for IITJEE). If u religiously follow yr plan for one quarter, u will hv a good idea yself how many hours u need to study every day.Like u, I had this question playing on my mind doubt when I was in Class 11 I had asked someone who got IIT JEE AIR 36 four yrs back (he just passed out with a 9.7 CGPA at IIT-B, participated in a lot of extra-curriculars incl Mood I etc & he is now leaving for Stanford Univ shortly ). He had said 3 hours a day wd suffice. His mother is a friend of my mother. So a reasonabl expectation is he wdnt tell me a lie deliberately. I had asked the same question to someone else who got a rank of 81 in JEE 2006 & he confessed that he had studied 8 hrs a day on weekdays & 12 hrs a day on Sundays.U see it varies a lot from person to person. All said & done, u don''t know if someone is telling u the truth ( it is like asking a lady what is her age or a gentleman what's his salary) ......if someone is not known to u personally, in all likelihood he might try to impress u by saying 2 hrs is good enough. The human psychology is to score such brownie points..... The key is the ability to draw up a plan & to work religiously according to that plan. Believe me not more than 10% peolpe hv time management skills. If u r ambitious ( the fact thast u r seriously thinking of IIT proves this ) & u r able to manage time, u shd succeed. And if u finish yr syllabus well latest by Dec 08, take it from me that u wd be in a good IIT in 2009. Let me confess here that I wasn't very good at time management myself & that reflected in my rank of 3800 plus in IIT this year. I made many mistakes which I don't want u to make. If u feel that my poor rank doesn't give me any locus standi to give sermons, well suit yself. I am sure my message wd make some difference in the lives of 1 or 2 students of this forum & their good wishes or their parents blessings will help me in the days to come. Maybe with their blessings I will make it to the IIMs which is my next career goal.
Yesterday, I had been to IIT-B for my counselling.I came across quite a few Kota students yesterday. Maharashtra students, particularly those from Mumbai city, too hv done well this time. I got several doubts regarding Branch Change/ reservation for SC/ST etc clarified from the Professor ( he belonged to Chemical Deptt) assigned for my counselling. Going forward, I wd like to share those bits of info on this forum. Incidentally, in JEE 2007, 121 out of the first 300 JEE ranks came from the IIT-Bombay regional jurisdiction. What is the corresponding figure for IIT-D, IIT-K, IIT-M & IIT-Kgp region ?. if anyone attended the Counselling session at one of those IITs, one wd know the figure.
