I'm confused, please help!!
Engineering Entrance , JEE Main , JEE Advanced

Hi guys

I'm having major problems in my life now.

I'm in 11th standard, and my parents are engineer (from IIT), and doctor (from Vellore) respectively. So, there has always been huge pressure on me.

Till 10th standard, I was getting good marks, but in my board, I failed to get good marks in Science (got 78, I have always topped Science in my school, apart from the boards), but got 95 in every other subject.

I took Science in 11th without hesitation, as in my head I was always going to IIT according to my parents (especially my mother).

I was forced to join FIITJEE in July, and have been there since. My performances have dropped in school, and my FIITJEE results are even worse. I am finding it very difficult to cope up with school and FIITJEE at the same time, with 4 hour classes 4 days a week, plus around 1 and a half hour commuting every day. I'm just finding it impossible to study on a regular basis. I, once or twice, mentioned to my parents that I wanted to leave FIITJEE, but they didn't listen.

Just a few days back, I finally said that I just couldn't handle going to FIITJEE, and that I wanted to leave. They've been after me for quiet a few months now (after my school half yearly results), but these past few days they've been just at it, constantly critisizing me, telling me how I'll be a failiure in life, that we don't have a business like some of my other friends, and that I'll end up as a school teacher if I continue like this. My mother has never been happy with my school marks (even if I get 95%, she complains why I didn't get 96), but the past few months have been torture for me. She's been just at it asking me study 24x7.

Now, I am genuinely interested in engineering. I've always found Science very interesting, and in my opinion, I'm great at grasping concecpts. My best study has always been self study (even when I was learning an instrument, I learned more on my own than with a tutor). However, my mother and FIITJEE combined, have made me started hating the subject. I don't mind working hard, studying 4-5 hours is easy for me, as long as I'm studying, not forced to study (like in FIITJEE).

But my mother thinks that it's impossible to clear JEE without coaching. I asked her about correspondence course of Vidya Mandir, and even a tutor to help me out, but she refuses.

So, what I want to ask is, can a person like me genuinely clear JEE without coaching. As it is, I'm finding coaching as a torture, which has removed all my interest from the subject. Is a correspondence course from Vidya Mandir, combined with JEE level books (Resnick-Halliday, R.C. Mukherjee, Loney etc), online tests, solving of archives and evaluation tests, and maybe with a tutor, sufficient to clear IITJEE if I start studying seriously from now on (4 hours every day) till my JEE exam in 2010 (as well as other engineering exams). My mother has this sort of obsession that going to FIITJEE, creates a competitive atmosphere. I personally, feel an inferiority complex when I go there, as I see people with more time, and more brains, doing much better than I am.

My life is reaching a cross road, and I need serious help. Any advise would be helpful.....

Thanks

See ur mom is right when she says coaching classes create a competitive atmosphere, but it is only useful if u get motivated to perform instead of being demotivated by those around you. Coaching classes finish the course in a structured manner which is not possible with self-study/private tuitions. On your own you may rush thru chapters or get stagnated on one chapter. Correspondence is good for reference but nothing beats classroom teaching. Ppl usually do self-study for IIT in their drop year, but majority of them attend coaching in the 11th and 12th. I wld suggest u ignore the parental nagging but go to coaching classes, dump FIITJEE and find another class if necessary.

But, that's my question. Is it possible to go through JEE without classroom coaching per say?

I've been investigating a lot into correspondence courses lately, especially Vidya Mandir and Brilliant.

As I've said, I HATE FIITJEE. Going there has been torture for me, and has prevented me from enjoying the subject. I personally feel that I'm orgranized enough to do my course in a regular manner, but is coaching really a must?

ok,first of all, dont be tensed.you are having enuf time for jee 2010,so dont worry.i think that you must go to fiitjee bcoz classroom institutes are far better then those correspondence ones, and there may be smarter brains than u in your class, but u must have the fire burning inside u to prove u r smarter than all of them, and iitjee is an exam in which lakhs of students compete for few seats and to get that seat in jee,you need to work hard for these1 and half yrs,so go to fiitjee, study for 4 hrs a day,use gud buks [the buks mentioned by u r gud] and work hard, common.u can do it,any problem, nudge me,all the best.

Thats a terrific coincidence.

I am a Guy from HYD with a problem even worser than yours. I scored less in my 10th boards(CBSE)  too. Then i wrote the entrance for IIT ramiah. I didnt qualify because i didnot take it seriously. Then because of my relatives advices and shit like dat i joined Narayana. I got through some fast track batch of theirs and was initially trying to go at their speed. But they were too fast and People were better dan me. I felt like commiting a suicide

Then i asked my parents to change my college they dint listen.

Guess what Narayana spark batch finished thermo dynamics in physics. They don't bother whether i understand or not. They just wanna complete the portion as soon as possible.I was too tensed. Now its december and I know nothing in chemistry.I HATE NARAYANA< IT SUCKS. But for physics and maths i have been taking coachings outsides from some IIT retired professors that i luckily found. I have twin cousin sisters who are IIT Kharagpur. I told them my problem. They spoke to my parents and my parents finally agreed to change my college. Next year I am joining some cheap govt college which doesnot need attendance and taking seperate coachings outside for IIT as i dont have to attend college in a Govt college of AP. They won force me to attend the college(the best facility i ever got). So dont worry. Finish your ncert books first and then start reading from other standard books. But my best advice is better leave fiitjee and search for some college like i got or go to a college which takes only 3 to 4hrs a day in the morning and leaves the rest of the day for yourself. But listen you must not only be ready to do self study but also be determined to get into IIT and avoid all diversions. Come on man i am with you, there is still time. Dont waste even a single minute of  Your 1st year vacations.

These were the tips given by my physics private tutor.

Ask any of ur cousins  or well wishers who are in IIT to speak to your parents and convince them.

And yeah dont bother about whos better than you or who is faster than you. Because you may be reading some other chapter and they may follow some other schedule. So all you have to do is keep preparing and just two months befor IIT You get many mock tests. As you would have completed sufficient portion you would be able to pawn most of your counterparts in those tests once you prepare hard throughout the next year.( I am just a little excited i found some one like me in such a condition).

i wud say something ... nothing is impossible in this world .. just u shud luk at wt ur capabilities are ... if u really want to do something .. then there are many ways to do it .. u shud chose wts best for u ..

first of all as far as ur doubt for self study is concerned .. u cn def crack jee with self study .. but its not an easy road at all .. srsly .. unless ur the very best of the best u cnt ... ( in 2005 the guy who ws air 1 dint take ne coaching .. but then he was also the inmo topper and got a gold medal at interational phy olympiad ... rarely do we otherwise see that ppl who study on their own cn do exceedingly well ... but some do nd if u think u r one of them then go ahead )

in my opinion , whatever u r saying ... is natural .. in pressure things happen our mind wanders and u seek other things .. but luk at others who manage .. they also arein a similar position ike u are ... but they manage .. managing isnt impossible .. so remove the notion of the fact u cnt .. cz if u want to succeed the question of cnt doesnt come ... u just ave ot do it .. it all depends on how bad u want it .. if u think u r gud ... but u cnt manage coahcing nd stuff .. then it clearly indicates the fact tat u lak spirit in u .. i m being really harsh here but of u really want to noe wts rite 4 u then this is wt u shud be listenig ...

now having parents ith high expectatios isnt wrong .. nd remember expectationbs will never end .. once u will get even air 1 their expecations will rise accordingly ... sometmes i agree it creates an undue pressure but then u shud take that pressur ein the positive way .. if ur parents expect gud from u then they do it cz they noe wt u r capable of .. nd trust me they noe best ... rest it all depends on u on how u cn translate that capability into results...

ntn is lost .. i wud say hang in there be determined for ur success nd work hard .. give ur best in whatever u do nd yes its very important dont hate fiitjee or stuf .. cz its of no use .. in fiitjee they teach u only uch different nhai karaate aur jab majority janta seekh jaati hai then y cnt u ? ask urself that u will get the answer

cheers nd i hope u take the rite decision

hey! i read ur prblm.

i dnt think dat 4 a guy like u, its not impossible 2 crack jee without coaching.

and as u say, if u can easily study for 4 hrs a day n u r fast at grasping concepts, i dont thnk dat u'll take much time 2 recover.

forget about what has happened n start ur studies afresh !!!!!

in exams like iit, hard work n consistency r necessary if ur good at dem no one cn stop u frm achieving ur goal.

as u say 1 of ur parent is engineer frm iit, it cn be very useful 4 u. if not ,den idea of a private tutor is nt bad. private tutor n corresp cources cn help u. n frankly speaking i thnk dat  even if u continue wid fiitjee n start self study at home according 2 u, den also u cn recover n slowly get into a state of being a tough competition 2 ur counterparts in fiitjee. nudge me if any prblm.

ALL D BEST .

Coaching is supposed to be supplementary to your self study. You have to do self study , whether or not you are taking coaching .

I think coaching is quite imp. There are a lot of benefits such as:

1) Organized material , adequate theory + good and relevant qns.

2) Friends:You meet like-minded people , with whom you can collaborate and study.DON"T consider them your "competitors" and shut yourself from them , rather discuss and debate openly.(Plenty of seats for toppers! :))

3)On-the-dial help:Your Sirs will be more than eager to help you(provided you show interest) if you have doubts.

4)Organized testing:Very imp , as regular tests will improve your ability to answer papers under stress.

Note that through self-study using corresp , you'll not get many of the above benefits.

My advice would be to join a weekend batch if possible.I myself never liked to attend coaching after school , so had my batch changed.

Also , please tell us why you "HATE" FIITJEE.While it may have its flaws , FIITJEE is one of the best coaching institutes with a good track record.I think its some non acad reason like:

1)You got insulted by a Prof/Student

2)You feel low among people who are better than you.

3) You are tired with your schedule.

Whatever it is , I suggest you tell us freely, if you'd want us to help.

Why coachings are supposed to be mendatory I left my coaching in spite of heavy oppose of my parents and now i m doing very well.I have lots of time for doing SELF STUDY.Their is no interference in my study. All my friends are going to coaching so if i have any doubt i just ask them either they solve them or took the doubt to the coaching teacher.

SO the bottom line is this if you have self confidence and well power you don't need any coaching my father daily gave me taunts for leaving coaching but i know i was right so it depends on you if you want to rebel just do it coz this is your future only you can decide how you gonna shape it.as bits360 has mentioned some importance we have some short cuts for it.

1)You can get it from your friends and if you have payed the full fees you can take it from coaching also.

2)You can have those competitive friends on your school or you can do group studies.

3)You can told your friends or you can go to coaching if you have paid the fees for doubt.

4)you can join test series later after completing all the course.Read the article on goiit that 3 experience in which the writer didn't give any test since he was studying some thing else and test was of some thing else.So test will give desired results only if you are fully prepared.

Best of luck

bits360, it's definetely 2 and 3.

Well, for the moment I've stopped going to FIITJEE. I've joined Vidya Mandir correspondence, and I've found 3 tutors, who teach at reputable coaching centers, to whom I'll go once a week for a 2 hour class each to clear doubts and concepts.

I'm starting from base, with mole concept, quadratic equations, and vectors and scalars.

I'm already feeling much more relaxed with my studies. Will be joining a test series very soon as well, and I plan to take some of Vidya Mandir's online tests soon. I've started with R.C. Mukherjee, and Vidya Mandir packages.

It's a brand new start for me, so let's hope it goes well.

Thanks a lot for all the help. I'm off to solve some quadratic equations

Well , its up to you guys. You should do what helps and what keeps you happy.

My point is that you shouldn't be alone ; you should be intearcting with like-minded friends and experienced teachers.

If you are able to manage this without attending coaching, well and good.

This is based on my own experience.I had never taken coaching till 11th std and was quite uncomfortable when I initially joined it.I had always considered that coaching is for duffers. But eventally I made good friends with other students and my profs. So it helped me a lot.

Best of luck to you all!!

Big coaching institutes are big scams.
Please stay away from them.
Study with your tutors who help you get 90% in exams and CBSE.
Prepare for IITJEE, over and above that.
Students dont get thru because of any coaching, they get thru on their own.
I can guarantee that the students of Vidyamandir would get thru IITJEE even without VMC. VMC does not add any value. They are just living off the fact that they manage to select students who would get thru anyway.
That why they dont take many students. They know that they can put students to IITs. So they select those who would anyway get thru.

Advices are free of tax  , still I stay away from such topics . Anyway I could not resist .......

There has been very little gramatical errors in the (rather long) query that you have posted , and I must say that there are very very few members , who can write coherently like you . My best wishes to you and all members .

Good Luck .
