no way dude. u are misinformed.
I have records of all students of CE from IITK.
a candidate with CPI 8.4 in CE had fetched job of pay = 5 lacs with Price WaterHouse Coopers in IT dept.
If he wud have been in CS with this CPI he would have earned atleast 10 lpa.
similar things apply to other students as well

I read somewhere. Nowadays average IIT package is 6-7.5 lacs and for CS or CE students it is around 2 lacs more. This is for year 2008, Year 2007 and 2006 will be lower.

Well, it is partly true.
And the truth part is nowadays, more companies (core) come for CE who traditionally were opting for IT jobs. But the pay are around 4.5-5.5 for 99% of them.
For CS it is a good 2-3 lpa more :D

what i dont understand is why da hell r u concentrating on the starting salaries??? is dat ur CRITERIA of chosing a feild??starting salary?? dude....in any feild, starting salary kuch bhi rehne de, it will increase based on your experience, your performance, your ideas and your role in the company.doesnt really matter if cs pays 2 lacs more than ce starting...at any time,as a civil engg, your pay will increase like anything. CE is in very big demand esp in india where in the coming few decades, the main focus will be on building the country's infrastructure.....!

what u shud look is faculty quality, their research papers, infrastructure
rank in some survey and all
