Mech not for girls?  This is the stupidest thing I have heard. Things like these make women excel so rarely in the field of science and tech.( atleast in india).

1. What category do you belong to? It depends on that, you may try NIT Durgapur/BIT Mesra/SASTRA or lower brances in better nits if you are in gen. 2. Woman can join Mechanical, no problem. If this is a good course in NIT-Silchar, you can take it. Rate if useful. 3. A core engg branch would be good if you want to continue in pure science field. I would suggest you put Engineering Physics in NIT-Calicut as your first choice, this will really help build up a career in Physics. Or, any core course like Mech, Chem, EEE, Electronics will do4.Electronics and Instrumentation is quite specialised, and I suggest you don't narrow down at this stage, especially if you want to continue with Physics. It should be below Mech, Chem, EEE, Electronics and Civil and Comp. in your list.Rate if useful.

Let me reply to your second question. My sister is also doing Mechanical. Even she was told that it is not for girls. Let me tell you that it is totally false: girls can do mechanical. The thing is that it does involve some heavy-duty machines and some physically demanding work, but I think it's quite possible for girls to do it. Also, there is a lot of drawing and design in mechanical and there are a lot of jobs in this field; girls will find drawing and design a very convenient aspect if they don't like the idea of some heavy-duty machines. But overall, mechanical can be done by girls and most of them excel in it.
