in differential calculus we r talking about small change.

  is the slope at a point in the graph of f(x).

Here, the change in x has to be very small so that the tangent can be constructed...

c we have to find out the slope(change in  y wrt x ) on that particular point and obviously change can be found out only over a range so...we mimise this range by making h tending to zero to approximate the point where we r needed to find out the slope...
