I saw a page of the book d.c.pandey on electricity.It says that, TWO SIMILARLY CHARGED BODIES CAN ATTRACT EACH OTHER  & THE COMB AFTER GAININING THE CHARGE DISCHARGES IT'S CHARGE TROUGH OUR BODY TO EARTH.IT IS WRONG BECAUSE COMB IS INSULATOR.CHARGE WILL NOT BE TRANSFERABLE IN IT. These mistakes should be rectified in a book like this,which is read by all over india

Well for the mistake i must say that it is theoretically possible. It is a problem of often a hot discussion whose answer is that 2 similarly charged bodies can attract each other if the gravitational force between them exceeds the electrostatic repulsion.
for second,plz specify page no.

he didn't say any thing abt gravitational force. he is talking abt only electrostatitic attractions.
the questions r in the page after the theory he has discussed in electrostatics.

No Yaar, If it's saying then it means that two oppositely charges can attract each other if their gravitational force of attraction exceeds the electrostatic repulsion.

Hey buddy....chill who says that 2 bodies with similar charges cannot attract each other?????? Yes , it can be possible if charge on 1 body (let say A) is much much larger than charge on the other (lets say B) . On account of induction , the ball B is carrying smaller charge shall aquire some net charge of opposite sign as its lying closer to A , SO B will experience some net force of attraction... so it is possible in this way... cheers!!!!!!!!

what himanshu told is correct yaar...........then for the second one i think PANDEY is correct...because if comb got +ve charge means electrons will flow from earth to it to make it at same potential... here conduction electrons will be of wire yaar... it is conducting na....if it got -ve charge means it got extra electrons... but they r not attached to atoms of insulator or we can say that they are nearly free... so they flow thru wire to earth......... is it correct my FRIENDS?.................. please rate me if u think it ts correct yaar......

opposite charges attract but it is not the only condition for attraction of charges... charged bodies can attract neutral ones too..... neutral objects can be attracted to charged bodies by electrical induction. for example, the charge on a negatively-charged body causes a separation of charge across the neutral body. the negative charges tend to move away from the side near the negatively-charged body, leaving that body with a deficit of negative charges (that is, positively charged). the positive side of the neutral body is then weakly attracted to the charged body by induction. this is what happens when a charged comb is brought near bits of paper (neutral) and it gets attracted.... this is the reason y we say repulsion is the sure test of charge and not attraction....

the electrostatic repulsion betn similarly charged bodies exceeds the gravitational attraction by powers of 10 ..so they have to repel ...... HIMANSHU SAID CORRECT IN THE VIEW OF MACROSCOPIC PARTICLE THAT IS IF 1 BODY HAS A CHARGE MUCH GREATER THAN THE OTHER IT WOULD ATTRACT BY INDUCTION OF CHARGES BUT AT THE MICROSCOPIC VIEW THEY HAVE TO REPEL BCOZ YOU CANNOT CHANGE AN ELECTRON TO A PROTON BY INDUCTION

If you are talking about JEE level,the first statement is wrong.Because forget induction as we should not go there in case of point charges.Just apply Coulomb's law and you get the answer.Another thing regarding protons attraction,that is definitely not related to any electrostatic attraction.It is due to their spinning about their axis or something like that which I can't recall correctly.However this too is well beyond the scope of JEE.So the 1st statement is wrong in my opinion.Some of the points raised by my friends in favour of DC Pandey's book does not look to suitable for our level.

Agreed that some concepts may be out of the JEE scope.
But that cant change the facts. I mean that does not mean that similarly charged body cant attract each other. So the statement is definitely correct. The author may have given the statement to prevent the misconception that similarly charged body can only repel each other........

1.purav said the protons r attracting each other that is not due tothe electrostatic attraction.that is only due the strong nuclear force between them which much much much...... greater than the electrostatic rep. bet. them.so the attraction.
2.i don't really agree with himanshu.due to the induction near by surface gets less similar charge density but not opp. charge density.if u r right then prove it.
3.buvana89said the attraction between the paper &charged comb is due to induction that is untrue.the attraction is due to resultant non zero force on the dipoles of paper(paper contains dipoles but not the free electrons to get accumilated on the surface of paper&soattraction)
