a parallel plate capacitor has plates of area A separated by a distance d. a metal block of thickness h is inserted midway bw the plates. find the capacitance. i got the answer but there is 1 more question along wid it. DOES THE CAPACITANCE CHANGE IF THE BLOCK IS MOVED SO THAT IT TOUCHES ONE OF THE PLATES?????

it will because once it touches one of the plates it becomes a part of the capacitor.and the capacity of a capacitor depends on its dimensions.

when it touches then it will definitetly a part of capacitor. capacitor will have one plate thick and one plate thin.thats it

Yes of course the distance between the plates is going to be less than by h but the area of the plates is going to be the same, the rest is going to be same
So capacitance will be (epsilon not*Area/(d-h))
Please correct me if i'm wrong.

well try guys............
actually when metal block is midway between plates of capacitor
it will behave like 2 capacitors with distance between their plates as (d-h)/2 conected in series with each other.......so, nett capacitance is (epselnot)A/(d-h)
and also if metal block touches one of the plate........then a single capacitor will be formed.with distance between its plates as d-h
so, in this case capacitance is (epselnot)A/(d-h)............
so, capacitance is same in all cases even when block touches one of plates...........
tell me if I m wrong anywhere..............
