the basic idea behind electrostatic shielding is that, the electric FIELD inside a cavity of a metallic shell is 0
because of this, even when the shell is placed in some field, the electric field inside the shell = 0 and hence, any equipment (which may get damaged due to electric field) will NOT get damaged..

my version since u talk abt shielding...suppose v have a eletric item highly sensitive to elec fields...v place it in the cavity..this instrument may have its own electric field..but this field will not be affected by ne field outside cuz the field lines of the external field cannot pass thru the conductor..similarly the fieldlines of the instrument also does not affect the external field
