same charges have magnetic field around....as it is d property of magnetic lines of forces ....not 2 cross each other or intermingle...instead it opposes d other magnetic lines of forces...so dats d reason y same charges repel each other...rate if satisfy

hey kashyap.its new to me,tht still charges have magnetic field around them.As far as i know, stationary charges have only electric field around them.Magnetic field is only associated with moving charges. Then according to ur reason only moving like charges should repel each other.I dont think this is the correct reason.

see guys........
every charge has some electric field around it...Posistive charge has an outgoing field while a negative charge has an incoming field.........as if we take same types of charges...then their respective fields are not satisfied...but if we take opposite charges they mutually satisfy each others field and thus its stated that.........
Like charges repel and Opposite charges attract.......

Electromagnetic Force of attraction is a fundamental force ( 1 of the 4 funda forces). So, it cant be explained by any other theory other than its own theory for which u need to know a lot abt quantum theory n quantum mechanics.
With the limited knowledge most us have abt quantum mechanics, we jus need to accept this fact.
@Aatish U cant explain like that. U cant talk abt electric field lines as they have been introduced only on the assumption tat like charges repel n unlike charges attract. U r using somethin to explain an event, whr tat "something" was derived based only upon tat event ! So, ur expln is not right.
Hope tat wasnt confusing ! :)

Electromagnetic Force is 1 of da 4 fundamental forces of nature.
" like charges repel and unlike charges attrect " -----is just the way things r. We hav to accept it as a cornerstone of Electromagnetic Force .
The bottomline is it can't be explained and I hope JEE will not ask da Q !

Every charge has its own electric field.
Field of +ve charges is outgoing while that of -ve charges is incoming.
When opposite charges are kept together, field lines go from +ve to -ve charge & hence they attract each other.
In case of same charges this does not hold & they repel each other.

Right, these are some fundamental laws on the basis of observation. No one knows the 'why' part.

@ Pantpranv...i said the same thing quite earlier.......
and
Mr. Ultimator.....Laws are made on the basis of observations...from which some assumptions are made and formulated and then stated as the laws.......Mr. Coulomb did that and u read that in ur textbook.....
from what he did....I just interpreted it in another way that cud become the answer for above question.....
and thus if u wanna say that i m wrong.....then u mean Mr Coulomb is wrong.....and if u r saying this then their is no use for u in studying Physics....u make ur own Physics and do that.....ok......mind it.......

Physics is an experimental science. These are things from experiments and common observation.
It can't be explained that way. We can find reasons from quantum mechanics and string theory. But still its too fundamental.

@Aatish
U r not getting my point. One is not allowed to talk about electric field direction unless one explain y like charges repel blah blah....
In r 12th std, we fail to think n find out a reason for this behaviour of charges n jus blindly accept , which i'll say again, is wrong !
No scientist is perfect n i feel Coulomb himself could not explain this behaviour of charges n just gave it as a basic law which could not be reasoned out but just observed.
Thus coulomb did nothing wrong but the way u explained is wrong. I m not accusing u. Plz understand.
Also thr is nothin like ur physics, my physics n coulomb's physics. There is only one physics.
N thr is also nothing in wrong in questioning earlier scientists however famous they may be. Newton himself believed in alchemy very much !
Questioning things n arguing is the way to learn physics. Not accepting the work of earlier scientists' blindly.
I hope u understand wat i meant to say. No hard feelings....
