Work Done by a battery is considered to be positive when it  transfer charges in the circuit.....and when it accepts charges then work done is negative,.....

In simple word it can be written as....if charge moves from High potential terminal of battery to the circuit...and then finally completing its path when it enters from the negative terminal then work done is said to be positive....and vice versa for negative case....

Work done = Charge transfered by Battery X EMF of the battery....
