 PE = -GMm/r ( wer "r" is the distance frm center of earth) therefore intially its PE1 = GMm/R (wer "R" is the radius of earth) and  finally its PE2 = -GMm/2R therefore Gain in PE = PE1 - PE2 = GMm/2R bt we knw that g = GM/R2 therefore gain in PE = gR/2......
