we al know that a hot air ballon rises as hot air is lighter and gives it a buoyant force to go up but my ques is that after reaching a certain height why does a hot air balloon bursts

because of change in pressure....at gr8 hts the pressure is very low......lower than the pressure of He gas used in the ballon.....so it naturally bursts.....hope u got it.....~Cheers...

but at low altitudes also the pressure is low as compared to the balloon

wel m not sure of this but i think, every material has its own capacity to sustain pressure,,,when the pressure is beyond the limit, it bursts,,,think of the tubes of vehicles.
The same may be the case with hot air baloons.

namaste..
itni fights mat kiya karo..
u all must have read about elasticity limit in NCERT.
thats d key,, when baloon reaches a height , in normally filled baloon pressure inside keeps on constantly rising, this stress-strain curve reaches elasticity limit, n bursts..
Thus in hot-air baloon where burning gases are used, flame is made to decrease and there is a certain limit to rise ..
