good afternoon, dwipayan !
here is the solution.
- va / ua = 1 / 2
va = - ua / 2 .........................eq 1
- vb / ub = 1 / 3
vb = - ub / 3 ..................................eq2
Now
1 / va + 1 / ua = 1 / vb + 1 / ub
replacing va and vb from eq 1 and eq 2 and solving it we get, ub = 2 ua ................................eq 3
ua - ub = 30 replacing ub by eq 3,
ua - 2 ua = 30
ua = - 30 ........................... eq 4
from eq 4 and eq 1, we get va = 15 .................... eq 5
now by mirror formula, 1 / f = 1 / va + 1 / ua plugging in eq 5 and eq 4,
f = { (1 / 15) + ( 1 / -30 ) }-1 = { 1 / 30 }-1 = 30 cm
so f = 30 cm
hope that my solution is correct.
PS - i am Karan, if u can recall.
