When we open a tap, the water flows down in a tapering manner (the width of the water column is broad near the tap and this decreases as it comes down). Do you know why

fro continuity equation we have...a1v1=a2v2...as water falls down its velocity increases and hence its area of cross section decreases

as the water comes out of the tap , its velocity increases due to the action of gravity on it . making the cross sectional area smaller

that is becozz of surface tension... it aquires to less possible area n increases its velocity so as to satisfy the LAW OF CONTINUITY... ie av=const..
