Sun attracts Earth by gravitational force.. Earth attracts moon.. But why isn't moon being affected by Suns Gravitational force??? Please rate me as I'm new kid on the block and rate only if my Q is genuine..

this is because the gravitational force existing b/w 2 bodies (in this case earth & moon) is unaffected by the presence of other bodies (like sun) cheers!!!!!! rate if useful

Thats funny... Gravitational force is kinda similar to Magnetic force rite?.. so take 3 magnets and hold two magnets such that they JUST tend to attract,, like the force of magnetization is JUST active b/w them.. now place the third one atleast a cm away from them.. hmm not cm but a reasonable distance.. and It wil attract to them and not like it wont attract because its a two magnet system.. hmm.. so your answer is not that useful KANE..

sorry bro gravitational force is not similar to a magnetic force coz' magnetic force is a repulsive force and gravitational force is an attractive force,moreover gravitational force exists b/w line joining centre of masses whereas magnetic force exists on the whole piece of magnet

Oh. ya ya.. but when it acts only b/w two bodies.. even if a foreign body comes in between why doesn't it get affected by the earlier two bodies' gravitational attraction???? my doubt is actually this.. you're answer helped me somewhat.. but answer this and be full.. ill defiantely vote ya!!

just like electrostatic forces existing b/w 2 charges is independent of the presence of other bodies similarly gravitational force is also independent due to the presence of other bodies.every body has its own gravitational field i.e. the extent to which it can attract another body.now how can its field be affected by the presence of other bodies?the bodies which are in a planet's grav. shield get attracted towards it.hence,the presence of other bodies does not cause hindrance in its own potential to attract other bodies

first the gravitational force attracts 2 body any where in universe hence moon faces the force of sun but since the distance between earth and moon is comparatively v low than distance between moon and sun the effect is smaller(not negligible) as a result moon is also a satellite of sun
for better look use triangle law of vector addition by considering them at vertices's of triangle

hey gandharva.. it's wrong to say that moon is not affected by sun's gravitationsal force.... it is of course attracted by sun's gravitational force.. but the problem is that it is much much closer to the earth.... and as you know.. gravitational force is inversely proportional to distance square.. hence.... gravitational force by earth is much more greater than that by sun... so, force by sun is js almost negligible to force by earth..... so, moon becomes earths satellite..

this is just a fact... during jurassic period, moon ws much more closer to the earth... and it looked about 3 times bigger......
