To go from one city to the other..a car travels 25km north,60km. N-W , and 20kms east.What is the approximate distance between the 2 cities??

 

IF U TRY  and draw a diagram u'll see a trapezium emerging with the longestside being the distance between the 2 cities. the best way woulb be to use vectors

 

1) 25 km north --> 25 j

2) 60km NW --> 302 ( -i + j)

3) 20 km east --> 20i

 

Add the three to get the resutant

 

that wud be (20 - 302) i  +  (20 + 302)j

 

square and add to find the distance

 

ans is 4400 = 2011 km

then teh distance between two cities is given by
