IF U TRY and draw a diagram u'll see a trapezium emerging with the longestside being the distance between the 2 cities. the best way woulb be to use vectors 1) 25 km north --> 25 j 2) 60km NW --> 30  2 ( -i + j) 3) 20 km east --> 20i Add the three to get the resutant that wud be (20 - 30  2) i + (20 + 30  2)j square and add to find the distance ans is  4400 = 20  11 km cheers!!!

Q) To go from one city to the other..a car travels 25km north,60km. N-W , and 20kms east.What is the approximate distance between the 2 cities? A) let S-N direction be along +ve y-axis and W-E be +ve x-axis then teh distance between two cities is given by (25 j ) + ( - 30  2 i + 30  2 j) + 20 i = (20 - 30  2) i + (30  2 + 25) j Now find the magnitude of this vector to obtain the final answer.

The Scientist does not study nature because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it, & he delights in it because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, life would not be worth living. Ofcourse I do not here speak of that beauty that strikes the senses, the beauty of qualities & appearances; not that I undervalue such beauty, far from it, but it has nothing to do with science; I mean that profounder beauty which comes from the harmoniuos order of the parts, & which a pure intelligence can grasp. |
