A ray of light travelling in water is incident on its surface open to air. The angle of incidence is , which is less than the critical angle. Then there will be a reflected ray and a refracted ray and the angle between them would be less than 180-2.

My doubt is that when the angle is less than the critical angle then why there is a reflected ray? There should be only a refracted ray.

This question came in IITJEE-2007.

Rates assured.

R U sure about ur answer. It doesn't look quite convinving. I mean you are talking about practical situation. We don't know if the question was meant for an ideal condition.

Tarin Shetty is perfectly correct. If angle is more than critical there is only reflection. If angle of incidence is less than critical angle then there is both reflection as well as refraction. Haven't you seen your image in a transparent glass.
