Monochromatic light of wavelength 600nm is used in a Young's double slit experiment. One of the slits is covered by a transparent sheet of thickness x m made of material of refractive index u . How many fringes will shift due to the introduction of the sheet?

Plz explain the question properly, I dont need the solution, its an example. What does shifting of fringes mean?

see,due to the thin sheet, the rays tht were giving central maxima at the original position, shall now do so at a pt above/below it depending on the position of the covered slit. Thus we may say tht the central maxima has "SHIFTED" up.....then we know how much it has shifted so we use "fringe width"( beta) as a counting unit for that distance and say,"it has shifted up 5 fringe widths..."..

Pls note we cannot notice the shift by observation!!...it shall appear the same to us!
