I want to know the physical significance....( Not by the formula of eccentricity of ellipse...)

That is in terms of distance from focus and directrix.

wel, i think ellipse is a distorted (regular oval) circle and its degree is distortion is defined by its eccentricity. As e increases, its distortion (difference between minor & major axes) increases, or we say curve becomes highly elliptical. So, the least distortion will be for e=0 which is a circle.

or take it this way...as the distortion increases, directrix comes nearer to the centre of ellipse...and as the distortion decreases , that is the ellipse becomes more circular, the directrix goes further apart from the centre.
For a circle, the directrix will be at infinite distance from the centre. Obvioustly distance of a point on the circle frm directrix is infinite while frm focus (which becomes the centre) is finite. So, eccentricity becomes zero.
