q) Three closed vessels A,B and C are at the same temperature T and contain gases which obey the Maxwellian distrubution of velocities. Vessel A contains only O2, B only N2 and C a mixture of equal quantities of O2,and N2. If the average speed of the O2 molecules in vessel A is V1,that of the N2 molecules in vessel B is V2, the average speed of O2 molecules in vessel C is ...?

is the answer  V1 V2 [ ] 2 / V12 + V22
take average mass of the mixture and put in the equation = [ ] 8RT / (M1 + M2)/2

replace M and M2      from two equations got earlier

v1^2 .v2 / (v1 + v2)^2

Mmix = 1/2[M1 + M2]    (where M is the molecular mass)

Mmix = 4RT/pi[1/v1^2 + 1/v2^2]

so average velocity of mixture is root(8RT/piMmix)

root( (2 v1^2 v2^2)/(v1^2 + v2^2))

= v1v2(root(2/v1^2 + v2^2))

the answer is v1 as the temp remains constant

acc to v=(8RT/M)^(1/2)
v is directly proportional to root T
