heat and temperature......
None

the top of the lake gets frozen at a place wher the surrounding air is at a temperature of -20 degrees......then

1) the temp of the layer of water in contact wit lower surface of the ice is -20 C and that of  water at the bottom is 0 C

2) the temp of the layer of water in contact wit lower surface of the ice is 0 C and that of  water at the bottom is 4 C

3) the temp of the layer of water in contact wit lower surface of the ice is -20 C and that of  water at the bottom is 4 C

4) the temp of the layer of water in contact wit lower surface of the ice is 4 C and that of  water at the bottom is 0 C...

yes vish.......the answer given here is 4th.......but how can this be possible....i mean if only the surface of the waters is frozen then the water at the bottom should hav temp higher than tat na?
pls tell me if i m wrong......

Hi Sneha,

I've asked my Physics Sir about this. {He's a great intellectual. He gave me the answer but didn't explain it and asked me 2 try 4 da answer. Then instantaneously I got an idea. I was thinkin' about it. After sometime I got it.}

The answer is 2nd option.

The water in contact with da ice layer 'd have a temperature 0degrees.
It?s 'coz water can't exist below a temperature 0 naturally i.e., without any pressure source.

And generally the common temperature of water 'd be 4degrees.So, the temperature of water at the bottom is 4degrees.

So the answer given in the source (book or 'xam) is wrong.

Answer 2 is correct, because the water is forming ice so the temperature is 0 degrees at that point and the bottom of the lake is having highest density of water which is 4 degrees.
