A uniform tube closed at one contains a mercury pallet 10 cm long. When the tube is raised vertically with the closed end upwards the length of the air column trapped is 20cm. Find the length of the air column trapped when the tube is inverted with the closed end downwards. Atmospheric pressure =75cm of Hg.

xplain your answer in detail so that i may understand the concept!

with closed end up:

volume of air = v1 = 20 x A, cm3, where a = c/s area and pressure = p1 = 75 - 10 = 65 cm of Hg

with closed end down:

volume of air = v2 = L x A, cm3 where L = length of air column, in cm., pressure = p2 = 75 + 10 = 85 cm of Hg

temp remaining constant, during the process,

p1.v1 = p2.v2 gives, 65 . 20A = 85 . LA

i.e., L = 15.3 cm
