its the Cp/Cv ratio....
Cp=molar heat at constant pressure and
Cv=molar heat at constant volume...
Cp-Cv=2R
Cp is always greater than Cv....
from ratio of Cp/Cv we get the idea of atomicity of gas
for monoatomic Cp=5 and Cv=3
hence Poisson's ratio or Cp/Cv ratio =5/3
Poisson's ratio 4 diatomic gas=7/5
Poisson's ratio 4 polyatomic gas=8/6
