What is the equivalent weight of CO2 ? (in general) in RC Mukherjee in many question its given by M/2. howz that possible... ex: 2NaHCO3 -------> Na2CO3 + H2O +CO2. heat there's no change in oxidation state of C so the equivalent weight should also be M only....how is M/2 possible.? plz help wid a good xplanation. Rates assured

equivalent weight depends on reaction to reaction

Q. 2g of mixture of carbonate, bicarbonate and chloride of Na, on heating produce 56 mL of CO2 at NTP. 1.6g of the same mixture required 25mL of N HCl solution 4 neutralization . Calculate the %age of Na2CO3, NaHCO3 and NaCl in the mixture from the above given data.
Ans. On heating the mixture, only NaHCO3 decmposes as 2NaHCO3 -------> Na2CO3 + H2O +CO2. heat therfore equivalent of NaHCO3 = Eq. of CO2 = 56/11200
(1 Eq. of CO2 occupies 11200 mL at NTP)
CAN ANY1 EXPLAIN THE LAST 2 Steps of the ANSWR......

i think the neutralization here is done by sodium carbonate...
so the reaction shud be
2HCl + Na2CO3 ----> 2NaCl + H2CO3
here.. 1 mole HCL needs just Half a Mole Na2CO3.. so while prodicng half a mole na2co3..half a mole co2 is produced..as per the equation u gave... thats y on neutralization of 1 equivalent HCL only half a mole of CO2 is produced...that means its equivlent is M/2

i would say that since valency of C does not change in this reaction, so it is not a redox reaction.(hence we would take the normal equivalent weight of CO2 which is found through---
equivalent weight of CO2 can be found through this reaction
C02 + H20 ->H2CO3
here we can easily see that eq weight of CO2 is M/2

in the reaction
CO2 + H20 -> H2CO3
1 mole of CO2 reacts with 1 mole of H2CO3 or 1 mole of CO2 reacts with 2 equivalents of H2CO3 (dibasic acid) or 1/2 mole of CO2 reacts with 1 equivalent of H2CO3
hence eq weight of CO2 is M/2
