Beacuse sodium lies in alkali group(basic) and when they are disslolved in water have a pH of greater than 7 while Cu is a transition metal.

Sodium is an alkali metal. Its oxide Na2O is a strongly basic oxide and it reacts with water to form a strong base. Na 2O + H 2O 2NaOH Copper, on the other hand, is a transition metal.
