XeF4------Xe has 8 e-----4 are used in 4bond pairs----rest form 2 lone pairs----6 pairs-----sp3d2-------for min repulsions 2e- lone pairs align opposite to each other axially-----F occupy eqt positions
-------shape is square planar
-----but geometry is octahedral.
-->Remember geometry and shape are two different things but well correlated---you just need not take lone pairs into account for shape of molecule.
first u find the no of valence electrons in Xe and then u find it in Xe+2 excited state. then u show the hybridisation of shells and then the bond between Xe and F thus forming an sp3d2 complex and having square planar shape coz the 2 lone pairs destort its geometry of octahedral structure.

THE shape is square planar due to the presence of TWO lone pairs of electrons (VSEPR THEORY)
