This is a JEE2006 question.Please reply. A solution when diluted wid H2O and boiled,it gives a white ppt.On addition of excess NH4Cl /NH4OH,the vol. of ppt. decreases leaving behind a white gelatinous ppt.Identify the ppt. which dissolves in NH4OH / NH4Cl.

i have got a clue for this Q you should have got it too
that tis Q relates to salt analysis if you go through salt analysis...

yeah its a jee2006 question and the answer to this is Zn(OH)2.... when excess of ammonium chloride is added in presence of ammoniumhydroxide, it forma a complex, giving white ppt of tetraammine zinc(II) Zn 2+ + NH4OH --------> [Zn (NH)3] 2+ it forms a complex, as the reagents are in excess....

The ans is aluminium hydroxide since it gives gelatinous white ppt.Zn gives brown ppt.

The precipitate dissolving in excess NH4OH is Zn(OH)2.

the ans is zinc hydroxide............it was delibrately given by the paper setter as most students will go for aluminium hydroxide on seeing gel. ppt. but note the line vol. decreases..........
