Litmus paper is used to test for the presence of an acid or indeed the presence of an alkali.
Therefore it will tell you how much H+ or OH- there is in the solution essentially, the protons and
the hydroxide ions being the key indicators that there is an acid or alkali (base) present accordingly.
Litmus paper is often used in school labs and the chemistry labs in general to test for an acid or
alkali !!!!!

IT IS ONE OF THE OLDEST FORMS OF pH INDICATORS...... The main use of litmus is to test whether the solution is acidic or alkaline. Wet litmus paper can also be used to test water-soluble gases; the gas dissolves in the water and the resulting solution colors the litmus paper. .........MAINLY LITMUS IS A MIXTURE OF VARIOUS DYES AND IT IS ABSORBED ON FILTER PAPER TO USE IT AS AN INDICATOR (AND CALLED LITMUS PAPER)
