it should be +2 as Nitrogen is more electronegative than Carbon,it will show negative oxidation number of -3,now hydrogen always shows +1,so oxid. number of C should be +2. rate me if satisfied

is it HCN or HNC???
in HNC, ox no of carbon will be ZERO. coz H-N=->C.

N is more electronegative among all of given elements,so it will have negative ON,-3 is more stable

umang in HNC, there is one double and one coordinate bond between N and C. thus ON, will be +2 (due to double bond) - 2(due to coordinate bond) = ZERO.
plz rate if helpful.

Hiii
well the answer is +2
it cud have been different as H-N = (and a cordinate bond) C
but here contribution of cord. bond is neglected ocz N is very much electro-ive than C
so Oxdn no. of N remains -3
and H is +1
so
1-3+x = 0 , x = +2
it remains + 2 in HCN also
coz there it has H-C =_N
hence the answer :) :)

SO for formal charge we use that formula, while for ON we directly compare EN. is this the difference??

Hey ! I read in a book that in a coordinate bond, if donor atom is more electro-ve than acceptor, then coordinate bond is treated as simple covalent bond acc. to this, i get a different answer!
