though Cd and Hg are in group of zinc they form oloured compounds while Zn does not.

Yes, the group is same but energy levels are different. Thus when electron transition occurs from higher to lower or ground state in zinc complexes the energy difference or quanta od photon lies in ultraviolet region.
But in case of Cadmium and mercury the energy levels or difference between excited and ground state levels correspond to the frequency that lies in visible region.

If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, life would not be worth living. Ofcourse I do not here speak of that beauty that strikes the senses, the beauty of qualities & appearances; not that I undervalue such beauty, far from it, but it has nothing to do with science; I mean that profounder beauty which comes from the harmoniuos order of the parts, & which a pure intelligence can grasp. |
