Strong and Weak Field ligands
None

What are strong and weak field ligands and how are they classified... How are they different from one another? Wud anyone give a simple and clear explanation?

Ligand def--->An ion, a molecule, or a molecular group that binds to another chemical entity to form a larger complex. In general, ligands are viewed as donating electrons to the central atom.
for sum example of common ligand check out d link below!!~

strong ligand-->A ligand that causes a large crystal field splitting which results in a low-spin complex.
weak ligand-->Compare with strong field ligand. A ligand that causes a small crystal field splitting which results in a high-spin complex.

The strong field ligands are ligands which cause larger splitting of energy of d orbitals resulting in formation of low spn complex (because thn pairing energy is less than energy required to put electrons in higher energy orbitals) Example cyno

Weak field ligands cause less spliting of d orbitals leading to formation of high splin complex. Example Chloro

STRONG FIELD LIGANDS----Ligand that exerts a strong crystal or ligand electrical field and generally forms low spin complexes with metal ions when possible.

WEAK LIGANDS----A ligand that exerts a weak crystal or ligand field and generally forms high spin complexes with metals.

ans) for any given metal cation the magnitude of crystal field splittin energy depends on the nature of da ligands . the gr8er the ease with which the ligand can approach the metal ion , the gr8er will b the the crystall field splitting caused by it . the ligands which affect only small degree of crystall field splitting r termed as WEAK FIELD LIGANDS . the ligands which affect large degree of crystall field splitting r termed as STRONG FIELD LIGANDS

the ligand order

I- > Br- > Cl- <NO3- < F- < OH- < OX2- < H2O < py = NH3 < en < dipy < o -phen < NO2< CN-< CO

so CO is a strong ligand according t the above order
