1)   In NCERT chemistry (class 12,part 1 , pg 250) it says that ..........when ligands approach the metal ion the degenerate d orbitals get split up . And the dx2-y2 and dz2 orbitals experience more repulsions from approaching ligand(since they are along the axes)  than dxy, dyx, dzx orbitals(not along axes) and so dx2-y2 and dz2 orbitals are raised above from barycenter  and dxy, dyx, dzx are pushed down from barycenter.... but my doubt is dxy, dyx, dzx orbitals do experience  some repulsions  from  ligand so why are they not  raised in energy from barycenter line like the dx2-y2 and dz2 orbitals (rise in the energy could be low but there should be some energy rise)

2)The figure on pg 245 of ncert......in fig 9.6....the two enantiomers shown seem to be super imposable then why that compound [Co(en)3]3+ is showing optical isomerism???

3)In diag 9.7 on the same page(245)  how is the second molecule mirror image of first......

nice doubt

as to question one.

both the set of orbitals are only higher than the actual energy they should have been possessing.
actualy baricentre is the mean energy(average) of the energies of the two set of orbitals.
If you closly look at it then you will find that the energies are in delta .

it means t2g are possessing 2\5 delta less than the mean energies.(denoted by the negative sign)
ands eg possess 3\5 more than the mean energy

For 1st que....
               firstly when the
dxy, dyx, dzx orbitals are not oriented along the direction of approach of the ligand but rather
dx2-y2,dz2 orbitals are oriented along the direction of approach of ligand so.......the latter ones gain some energy from the former ones......which gives rise to their rise in energy level......and consequently the former ones drop down in the energy level.....

FOR QUES 2 and 3.........

the diagrams are made in 2-D and the geometry is in 3-D
(octahedral).....just try to imagine in 3-D....you may understand the difference........

hope it helps........

Cheeerrsss!!!!!

I told you know for that you have to visualize it........

it cannot be explained here try it yourself.......

take the help of some pens...try to make an octahedral geometry with that....it may require help of some volunteers.....but if done properly then it will clear all your doubts.......

Cheers!!!!!!!!

the second molecule in ques is in trans form but we know that enantiomers occur only if the molecule is in cis form(its written somewhere above in that page only)
