plz give any compound....we'll try to Xplain u....actually dipole moment of a compound depends on its atoms also.....so better u mention sum examples so dat we cn xplain.....

It will be zero. The two axial dipole moments cancel. On the plane the equatorial bonds are all 120 degrees apart. So they cancel.

It depends on the elements present in the compound.....

It usually depends on the kind of atom or molecule attached . If 5 simple atoms (like Cl,F...etc.) are attached to the central atom then the dipole moment will be zero . But if the attached species is unsymmetrical (like OH , CN etc.) then the dipole moment will be non zero .
Hope you find this useful ...

well i dont know whether u know or not that PCl5 is an ionic solid even though it has a trigonal bypyramidal structure.  so in all cases the diople moment is not zero. nd foor proof u can see 12th ncert.

hey i have read this as a fact in the 12th ncert. it ia an exception and u can see it as well that in solid form it exsits in ionic form as (PCl4)+ nd (PCl6)- but in gaseous & liquid state it is covelant hense no dipole moment due to symmmetric struture nd the same case is with the PBr5 which exists as (PBr4)+(Br)- in the solid form nd also PI5 exists as (PI4)+ nd I- in solutions.so its also the state to determine the structure of molecule.
nd u can also see it in the book"consinse inorganic chemistry" by J.D. Lee on pg no 497 topic is pentahalide. nd also in the ncert 12th 1st part p-block chap topic "phosphorus"
