The following reactions are involved when Cr2+ and Fe2+ act as reducing agents.

 

Cr2+  Cr3+ Fe2+  Fe3+

 

The value is −0.41 V and  is +0.77 V. This means that Cr2+ can be easily oxidized to Cr3+, but Fe2+ does not get oxidized to Fe3+ easily. Therefore, Cr2+ is a better reducing agent that Fe3+.

Cr2+ is a stronger reducing agent because it can lose one of its electron to become Cr3+ in which the t2g level of d-orbital is half filled and eg level is empty.

The crystal field stabilization energy of Cr3+ in aq. solution is maximum due to its d3 electronic configuration while the same is nil for Fe3+ due to d5 electronic state. So, Cr2+ is a stronger reducing agent.

After oxidation Cr3+ has a d3 configuration and Fe+3 has a d5 configuration. So d3 is more stable due to half filled t2g level. and also d3 IS MORE STABLE THAN d5 IN A MEDIUM(LIKE WATER)....
