An extract from tennis.com on the Hamburg Masters:

The one who knew this was a choke is Nadal. There were no high-flying leaps, no brazen fist pumps, no loud shouts of "vamos"; no emotional demonstrations or celebrations of any kind (like we saw in the Semi-Final). He was witnessing his friend have a near- nervous breakdown on the court, and he couldn't do anything to help him. The expression on Nadal's face at the ceremony told the whole story. He didn't look like a guy that just made a piece of history by winning the only clay Masters Event that had eluded him. He looked like he was on his way to a funeral. In a way he was, because on Sunday he was forced to yank his friend off his life support. Nadal felt so badly that his first words went to Federer directly when they handed him the microphone: "I'm sorry". That tells us all we need to know.
