Magnetism
An electron is projected horizontally with a kinetic energy 5 keV in a space where the magnetic field of strength 10-5 T exists in vertically upward direction. Calculate the sideways deflection of electron as it travels through 1 m along the direction of field.

Motions of a charged particle in magnetic field

Figure 1: Motions of a charged particle in magnetic field
Using F = q (v X B) = q v B Sin 90
or F = 1.6 * 10-19 * v*10-5
Now energy of electron = 5keV
Thus E = 1/2 m v2
or v = (2E / m )1/2
where mass m = 1.67 * 10-27 kg
or v = 978817 m/s
so
acceleration = a = F/ m = 1.6 * 10-19 * v*10-5 /m
substitute m and v
and find displacement for 1m distance travelled along the intial direction of electron.
