Cu (elemental) though wid 3d10 4s1 config. is diamagnetic. why????
i mean it has unpaired e- tho it ehibits diagmagnetism..
can ny1 temme y

hey punnima ......
good qs yaar........its a common qs though.......

copper is one of the exceptions to the general electronic configuration rule........
its atomic no. 29 rit.......
so you would expect it to be 3d9 4s2.....

but actaually its not bcoz 1 electron is borrowed from 4s orbital to completely fill the 3d orbital......
so its config is....3d10 4s1.......
...so we are actually looking at an element which has both completely filled orbitals in either way......that's the trick to remeber it...

that's the reason copper is diamagnetic (due to the unpaired electron in 4s orbital).........

remeber this.......even silver and gold work on the same principle.......
there 1s elctron becomes the reason for their diamagnetism....

ask me if u still have doubts......

@kundan_leo, even i didnt understand what you meant by that statement.

Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.

arre yaar...........you picked up the wrong line........
what i meant was that it luks either way in conventional and actual config.............they r both diff by an unpaired electron........

but that's the exception for these elements........dude u actually picked the most insignificant line of that explanation......i was trying to give a way to remeber the exception..........when u explain sum1.......u hav 2 do it with pros n cons.........rit

case rested.....

i still didn't get it...

do u mean that if unpaired electrons are present in original configuration(3d9 4s2) as well as true configuration(3d10 4s1).....then the element is diamagnetic...??

noooooooo.....................it doesn't matter what the "SUPPOSED CONFIG." should be................

it's just used to explain the whole damn thing........"THE LARGER PICTURE"........

THE ANSWER IS.............ALL THESE 3 ELEMENTS CU , GOLD AND SILVER ARE DIAMAGNETIC DESPITE HAVING AN UNPAIRED ELECTRON.........BECAUSE OF THAT BORROWED UNPAIRED ELECTRON WHICH THEIR D ORBITALS INHERIT FROM THE S ORBITAL........

FINE...........TELL ME IF U STILL AREN'T CLEAR.....

im not satisfied still with the explanation... Either config u see, there's still an unpaired electron... Do u mean to say that that electron satisfies the pairing of both d and s electron (something like resonance hybrid)?

yes, bt the theory exists to explain the facts!
can someone please explain this?
