An electron is projected horizontally with a kinetic energy 10 kev. A magnetic field of strength 1.0 X 10-7 T exists in the vertically upward direction. Calculate the sideways deflection of the electron in traveling through 1m. Make appropriate approximations.
 Ans: 1.5 cm approx.

Make use of the fact that in a magnetic field the Lorentz force is given by
 
F = q (v X B)
 
v is velocity of electron is perpendicular to the manetic field B
 
q = charge on electron.
 
Also use the fact that in magnetic field the total kinetic energy of charged particle remains CONSTANT that is the magnitude of velocity or speed of the particle is CONSTANT, but its direction changes and thus it moves in circular motion.

Ofcourse I do not here speak of that beauty that strikes the senses, the beauty of qualities & appearances; not that I undervalue such beauty, far from it, but it has nothing to do with science; I mean that profounder beauty which comes from the harmoniuos order of the parts, & which a pure intelligence can grasp.

Edison sir, I had used both the concepts that you gave, but that way I could not find the answer. It is the (b) part of the 2nd question of the "Magnetic Field'' chapter of Concepts of Physics. The answers in that book are generally correct. So, I may be wrong somewhere. Plz post the solution.
