Its due to the material's electrons' magnetic dipole moment. The electrons have their own individual magnetic dipole moments and act as magnetic dipoles arranged randomly. When a magnet is brought in their vicinity, these magnetic dipoles rearrange themselves properly and give a net magnetic dipole moment to the whole material and the object now starts acting as a magnetic dipole(magnet).

Hope it helps you.

When a magnet is brought close to a ferromagnetic material such as iron.........

some of the "magnetic domains" in the material change so that the material

becomes a magnet. ..............

This process is called magnetic induction. ....

When the magnet is removed......

most of the domains change back to the way they were

before, so that the material is no longer a magnet........

Materials,,,which act this way are called nonretentive or magnetically soft magnetically soft

materials.....

the individual particles(domain) get oriented in the direction of the magnetic field and hence behave as magnetised particles..
