that's because when the magnet is cut into halves we use to consider the two poles i.e. north pole and south pole at its each end....

It is the propery of magnet that it exists in two poles form... it is experimentally determined also that if we cut it into two halves, then also it develops the two pole nature....

 Practically speaking.

Two poles are enough to explain all the known properties of magnet..

If someday it is found to be insufficient, I guess that day u'll have more poles in the same!!

so it is completely experimental!!!
