A path of water-jet is observed (jet coming from a bucket having a small leak). What will one observe the trajectory of the same jet to be when free fall is allowed for the bucket?

MY ANSWER IS WRONG..........

FIRST DUE TO IT`S FREE FALLING STATE THE TRAJECTORY MOTION WILL STOP AND WATER WILL FLOW IN DROP WISE MOTION......

I KNOW IT IS INCORRECT........PLEASE GIVE ME CORRECT EXPLANATION ............................

In freefall,there are 2 cases:

1) air resistance neglected

In this case, the water will not fall out at all....the water AND the bucket will both fall freely until they hit the earth...infact the water might float out thru the top.but this is of course not considering air resistance and air flow around the bucket as a whole......

2) Air resistance is considered

if considered, I feel tht the high upward air flow would lead to creation of a low air pressure area near the hole leading to a faster flow of water (sort of like a aerosol spray) but the trajectory would be a complex one which I don't think can be defined by simple curves....

even raid's hypothesis may be right in case of case 2 (considering air resistance).water might break up under the pressure of air and flow as drops....so raid...u might be right buddy!!

hmmmmmmm.........

...... d answer is dat d water will flow in staright line wid respect to d bucket ......

..................d reason being they r fallin freely so force ent is zero hence accc is zero

.......................thus velocity is const

......thus it follws a parabolic path

hey actualy y wud the water even flow out? there wont b presure diference if im not rong coz P=hdg...here actual acceleration is 0 (reference) so ther wont b presure dif... n water remains inside... coz center of mass has 0accel n initialy at rest... asuming the buket is droped exactly at the instant the hole is made...

deedee is wrong. Spearhead is correct. Madmax is also correct, just a point madmax, we generally consider the air resistance to be absent, so I didn't mention it. This Qn appeared in Science Olympiad 2008, and was of the form of an MCQ!

Nice attempt guys!

Thanks Hamba........but its sad tht we don't consider air resistance....tht basically takes the question far away frm real world situations.....I knew tht probably U meant the non-air resistance case so I'd mentioned both cases!!

cheers!!
