Hi.
If he puts the quantity which is to be sold in the pan whose arm is of larger length. He would gain...this is because torque of mg on that pan would be more than the torque of mg on the other arm (due to unequal arms)....so the weight shown is wrong and is more than the actual weight .However if he puts  the WEIGHT on the pan having larger am length he would be
at loss due to the same reason. So maybe the answer is both A,B

There is no better feeling in this world than being a winner!

to sell the articles he will have to make the arms equal as one will go down more than the other, the quantity put on the larger arm is fixed so he will have to put more quantity on the other so he should LOSE

Joy is correct....

whenever the balance is balanced ..... ie it is in rotational equilibrium... the torque due to the masses on the two pans will be equal..
if we neglect the mass of the pans..
the pan with longer arm will contain less mass than the pan with shorter arm... and so loss or gain depends where the thing to be sold is placed...

now u try to reason out what will happen... loss or gain... if we dont neglect the mass of the pan?? the mass of the balancing rod of the balance??
