i think answer is that assertion and reason both are true but the reason doesnt explain the assertion... this is because when coil is stretched, the force is tangential to the surface of the coil.. hence, shear modulus determines the stretching of the coil... plzz correct me if wrong..

dear anubha,

stretching a coil depends upon its shear modulus. which is a measure of rigidity of its shape. so both A & R are correct but R is not correct explanation.
