Q] The smaller mass in the fig is pushed on the longer one at a speed v and the system is left to itself.
a] Find the speed of the larger block when the smaller block is sliding on the vertical part
b] Find the speed of the smaller mass when it breaks off the surface of the larger mass at a height h
c] Find the max height that the smaller block ascends(from the ground)
d] Find the distance traversed by the bigger block during the time when the smaller block was in its flight under gravity.

(a)
if V is the vel of big block towards left,

( M + m )  V = mv  ( The smaller mass in the fig is pushed on the longer one at a speed v)

V =
mv / ( M + m )

it is not important where u stand, but in which direction u are moving

yes.

( B)

Let v1 be the vel at which the block breaks off.
Then,
intial energy of block = mv2 / 2

kinetic energy of large block  = MV2 / 2

P.E. of small block = mgh

K.E still retained by small block = mv1 2 / 2

ppl. of consv. of energy gives,

mv1 2 / 2   + mgh   =   mv2 / 2 - MV2 / 2

v1 2 / 2   + gh   =   v2 / 2 -  (M / m ) V2 / 2

v1 =  desired result
