A wooden log (density 0.5 gm/cm3) is floating in the water. The cross section of the log is an equilateral triangle. Which side up will it float?

answer is C.
reason.
block will be in equilibrium when it will displace more water...in options A,B,D, it is displacing less amount of wtaer & only in C it is displacing more water comparatrively...so answer is C..

c) is the answer... the part of the log which weighs greater then the volume of water it displaces, is submerged always.. and the part which weighs less than what it can displace in water , floats.
The diagram corresponding to it is (C)

For me , its [A].
coz the mass of water displaced is equal to total mass of log. Thus, as density of log is half than that of water, it will displace water half the volume of log. which is not in C obviously lol. It is in A. So,[A] should be the answer.

Answer is a). Let me just elaborate a little more. Now, as the density of water is twice that of the block, it will need only half the volume of the block dipped in it to balance it. To make it more clear, let us do a quick calculation:

Let its volume will be V. Now, its mass  = Vg(0.5)/ = Vg/2.

Now, in water, let the volume submerged be half its original volume, (say).
So, volume in water = V/2. Density of water = 1.

So, weight of liquid displaced = (V/2)g which clearly balances the weight of the block.

So, according to me, it should be A.

Will nip in at times to solve problems :)
