a ball is projected from a point in a horizontal plane so as to strike a vertical wall at right angle after rebounding from the wall it strikes a horizontal plane once and returns to the point of projection. find coefficient of restitution for the 2 collisions, assuming it to be same for both.

Let the particle is projected with velocity u at an angle a with horizontal.
Distance travelled upto wall = u2sina.cosa/g
After rebounding from wall horizontal velocity becomes e.u.cosa. Hence distance travelled upto 1st bounce = (e.u.cosa)(u.sina)/g = (eu2sina.cosa)/g
After bounce the vertical velocity becomes e.u.sina Hence distance travelled between 1st and 2nd bounce = (2e2u2sina.cosa)/g
Hence equating the going and coming distances.
(u2sina.cosa)/g = (e.u.cosa)(u.sina)/g + (2e2u2sina.cosa)/g
2e2 + e - 1 = 0
e = 1/2
