Collision question...

None

2 equal billiard balls are in contact on a table. A third identical ball strikes them symmetricaly and remains at rest after impact. coefficient of restitution is ?

why there is a issue..this is a standard ques. i think..

2/3..of course..

initial mom . = mv.

final mom. = 2mv'cos@..here @ =30. (by geometry)

(horizontal cons.of momentum)

now e = v' / vcos@. (draw impact line)..

e = 1 / 2cos^2@..

e = 2/3.
